Meeting Notes

Note: The following is an abbreviated summary of public comments received at the titled public information meeting for the North Country Transportation Study. The comments do not necessarily reflect the views of the Development Authority of the North Country, New York State Department of Transportation, or Wilbur Smith Associates.

  • Seniors like the road project;

  • What airports are going to be closed down?

  • There is only one supermarket in Canton – others have closed because trucks will not serve the serve the region.

  • Why not consider passenger service to the North Country?

  • Rail service needs more money/subsidy than it currently receives.

  • Will the study address only through routes?  Will the study plan feeder routes?

  • Lake Placid roads are bad, but yet they are able to attract tourism events and they are just as isolated as the rest of the North Country.  Why?

  • Why did Interstate 81 not follow Route 11?  Why did is cross at 1000 Island Bridge?

  • A corridor should be defined from Ogdensburg to Plattsburgh with spurs for side streets;

  • Maintenance cost should be included in the study;

  • Many of the local children have left the area after graduating from high school and college;

  • Will their be opposition from environmentalists?

  • Is the region handicapped by the Adirondack Park?

  • How will we get money for the next step of the study?

  • The Canadian side of the St. Lawrence Seaway is much more completely developed that the US side.  The Canadian side is prospering and has better infrastructure;

  • The rail service needs the same kind of Intermodal Center that Syracuse and Utica have.

  • Rail service should be offered from Syracuse to Watertown and even Massena with connecting bus service to the Canadian side.

  • Rail road grade crossings require constant vigilance;
