PUBLIC MEETING - October 24, 2000

North Country Transportation Study

Note: The following is an abbreviated summary of public comments received at the titled public information meeting for the North Country Transportation Study. The comments do not necessarily reflect the views of the Development Authority of the North Country, New York State Department of Transportation, or Wilbur Smith Associates.

  • The decline in regional population could be explained by the closure of the Plattsburgh AFB and loss of local secondary employment;

  • The link from Plattsburgh to Burlington is important to the regional economy;

  • The proximity of Montreal Durval airport is a serious problem in trying to build local aviation;

  • It is important to document the value of a regional airport to this study;

  • Plattsburgh has three airports and wants one airport;

  • No rail service has run from Malone east to Plattsburgh – the Montreal Secondary goes into Canada;

  • Intermodal – Rail – Truck - is important at PARC and to Ogdensburg;

  • Amtrak experiences delays at the border crossing because clearance is not made in Montreal or stateside;

  • Data from ferry service should be included to the extent available – passenger and truck;

  • At the ferry terminals road access is important;

  • A road connection to a new Plattsburgh airport would be important to its success especially from Franklin County;

  • It will be important to the study to try to determine how many people are leaving Clinton County for airport service.
