Free Unwanted Paint Collections for St. Lawrence County Residents

April 1, 2025

St. Lawrence County residents will have the opportunity to recycled unwanted or leftover paint at a free monthly collection offered by St. Lawrence County and PaintCare, a non-profit recycling organization. The Development Authority of the North Country is assisting with the coordination of the effort.

The take-back collections will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month throughout the spring, summer and fall at the St. Lawrence County Highway Department, 44 Park Street, Canton. Residents will no longer have to wait for a Household Hazardous Waste collection event to safely dispose of their unused paint.

The following coatings will be accepted at these PaintCare events, in five-gallon containers or less:

  • Interior and exterior latex, acrylic, waster-based, alkyd, oil-based or enamel coatings
  • Deck coatings and floor paints
  • Primers, sealers, undercoaters
  • Stains
  • Shellacs, lacquers, varnishes, single-component urethanes
  • Waterproofing concrete/masonry/wood sealers and repellants (not tar or bitumen-based)
  • Metal coatings, rust preventatives
  • Field and lawn paints

Paints must be in their original, sealed container with their original labels.

These collections are for residents only. Businesses can reach out to PaintCare directly to arrange for a large-scale pickup of over 100 gallons.
